Ultram (tramadol) belongs to the class of drugs called opiate antagonists and is supposed to be sued for the treatment of pain and other conditions as prescribed by your health care provider. Being allergic to Ultram, morphine, codeine, hydrocodone, hydromorphone and propoxyphene will prevent you from taking this medication safely. Talk to your doctor about an alternative but do not take Ultram anyway, as this can lead to an allergic reaction that will make it impossible for you to keep on taking Ultram. Ultram comes as a tablet and extended-release tablet taken orally. The regular tablet should be taken every 4-6 hours as required, while the expended-release tablet is taken once a day. Do not take more of Ultram at once even if you missed a dose and are now trying to make up for it. This is not going to make your treatment more efficient and you will get some unpleasant symptoms as a result. Your health care provider is supposed to know you full medical history before prescribing Ultram, including if you ever had infection in your brain or spine, brain tumor, suicidal thoughts, lung disease, breathing problems, stroke, diabetes, kidney or liver disease, head injury, seizures, or depression. This will help to establish the minimum dosage that you will benefit from.

It's a good idea to make a list of all the medicines that may potentially cause interactions with Ultram. These may include some of the following ones: sleeping pills, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, medications for anxiety and mental illness, seizure medications, rifampin, sedatives, pain medicines, monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, muscle relaxants, nausea drugs, tricyclic antidepressants, quinidine, erythromycin, warfarin, and antifungals. There are many other medications that have been reported to interact with Ultram. In some cases your will required some adjustment of Ultram, while in other cases your health care provider may recommend taking less of the drug you are already on – all that to make sure there are no serious worsened side effects. Never take more of this medication that prescribed, as this can result in a number of unpleasant overdose symptoms (seizure, extreme drowsiness, unconsciousness, coma, heart attack, difficulty breathing) and in some cases can even lead to death.
